  1.         WINDOWS INTERNET ("WINTER") SOFTWARE PACKAGES

  4. This is  my  first effort at providing a detailed listing 
  5. of Windows based software packages for use in communicating    
  6. on the Internet. This is not a complete listing but represents     
  7. some of the best available shareware/freeware. All of these    
  8. packages can readily be found on the Internet through search
  9. tools like Archie and Gopher, almost always in multiple
  10. locations which is why I  have supplied file names and 
  11. asociated data and not always location information which
  12. is subject to unexpected change anyway.  I appreciate
  13. receiving any corrections, information on packages missed,
  14. or comments, good and bad, on any of these that you have
  15. tried out. I'll do an update if there's sufficient interest.
  16.  
  17. Unless otherwise stated, using these packages with a modem
  18. requires:    
  19.        1.  Windows 3.1 or better.    
  20.        2.  A "slip" account from an Internet provider.    
  21.        3.  A special communications package capable of accessing
  22. the slip account through a modem. Peter Tattam's Trumpet Winsock
  23. version 1.0a (twsk10a.zip) is the best known and is widely 
  24. available on the Internet, and I believe, on Compuserve. Normal
  25. modem communications packages by themselves do not currently work.    
  26.        4.  Patience and perseverance - documentation with these
  27. packages is often minimal at best, and many are still under
  28. development.    
  29.  
  30. Some of these packages I use myself on a regular basis, some 
  31. I have tried out briefly and some not at all yet. Needless
  32. to say, you try out these packages at your own risk.

  302.         a client. Required minimum of a 386 processor.
  303.         Very confusing package if you don't understamd
  304.         the lingo. An excellent newsreader, and I have
  305.         seen its telnet capability mentioned favorably
  306.         elsewhere, but the FTP is inferior to other 
  307.         specialized shareware packages which are
  308.         available in my opinion.
